Welcome to the world of SCRUMMY!!! The object of the game is to spell words using the 12 cards each player is dealt to outscore opponents, and be the first player to finish a round with 500 or more points.
1. Shuffle SCRUMMY cards, a standard dictionary*, a score keeper with pen and paper** or SCRUMMY Score sheet.
2. Deal each player 12 cards then place the remainder of the deck in the center, face down within reach of all players. The dealer takes the top card from the deck and places it in a face up pile next to the deck. (NOTE: If the first card revealed, is a LOSE A WORD or LOSE A TURN card, the dealer must turn over another card until a letter card is revealed).
3. The player to the left of the dealer begins. Every player’s turn begins by drawing a card. Player’s can either choose 1 card from the face down deck which can be used at any time OR, they can pick up the top Letter card (1) from the face up pile, which must be used immediately in that turn to spell a word.
4. Next the player spells a word of 3 letters or more***. When laying down a word, players MUST SAY EACH LETTER OUT LOUD, Not the word itself. Words are laid down in a vertical direction going toward the center of the table. The WILD CARD can be used as ANY letter at ANY time (see ex. which includes use of a WILD CARD in place of the letter A )
P
{{A}}
N
(If the word is not challenged*, play continues)
Each player finishes a turn by discarding 1 card from their hand onto the face up pile. (See here**** rules for discarding LOSE WORD/TURN cards.) (if after drawing, a player does not find a word to play, the player must “pass” by discarding any unwanted card).
5. The next player draws from the deck, Or draws a letter card from the face up pile to use immediately, and either lays down a different word in front of themselves,
Or
Adds one or more letters to any word on the table, and completely change the meaning of that word. For ex., if adding an S and an E to P{{A}}N, the player spells aloud “my word is: S-P-I-N-E, or my word is: S-N-I-P-E” because add-ons can spell words in either direction AND can change the WILD CARD letter as desired. The points for ADD-ON’s are counted immediately and given to the player for the creation of a new word. ( **See sample score sheet: The score for this play would be 85 plus an additional 25 bonus points scored for adding to another player’s word). After counting the points for this turn, the S & E cards are discarded into the face up pile, AND the player then discards another card from their hand to complete the turn. Important: The word P{{A}}N stays on the table and can later be changed in order to form different words, see examples ***.
(Score keeper records the ADD-ON word, in our example SNIPE, into the USED/LOST words column of the score sheet, it cannot be used again in this round**)
6. The next player draws a card and has the same options. They can either, spell a new word from their hand and then discard an unwanted card, or ADD-ON to any word already on the table, scoring immediate points, discarding add-on letters, and completing their turn with a discard. Players can ADD-ON to their own words for points however no bonus points are awarded for these add-ons.
7. Play continues until any player is Out by getting rid of all the cards in their hand with 1 card left to discard. (NOTE: If a player’s last cards spell a word leaving no discard, the round continues to the next player)
The first player Out ends a round and gets 50 additional bonus points. (**see sample score sheet)
8. When a round ends, all players determine their score for the round, by subtracting the points of all cards still left in their hand, from the points of their words still left on the table. The score keeper records each player’s score for the round.
9. The deck is then shuffled, each player again dealt 12 cards, and play resumes. The game ends, when at the end of a round, any player has 500 or more points. The player with the most points wins SCRUMMY!!!!!
10. Be Creative! Bring your ATTITUDE, because at least 85% of the time there IS an option for a new word to be formed from whatever “hand you’ve been dealt”!
